Sedo Closes Year's Biggest ccTLD Deal To Top This Week's Domain Sales Chart

Sedo closed a monster country code sale this week to easily lead our latest all extension Top 20 Domain Sale Chart. They did it with a German domain - Aktien.de ("stocks" in German) that changed hands for a whopping €500,000, $725,000 at today's exchange rate. That was a huge multiple over the previous ccTLD Year to Date Chart leader (2nd chart on that page), Deals.com.au, an Australian domain that sold for $100,000 in April. If you go to Akitien.de you will see a developed site there now but that was put up by the new owner who paid the 725K for the name only.

Sedo also took the #2 slot on the Big Board with another six-figure sale. Their broker, Dave Evanson, put together the $120,000 sale of OnlineDegree.com. Sedo went on to sweep 14 of the 23 chart positions (the extra places resulted from a four-way tie for #20).

Sedo's haul included all six of the country code domains that made the elite list, including a second one in the top ten; #6 (tie) Republic.eu, a name that was sold to the owners of UK clothing store Republic.co.uk for $26,240. Sedo's ccTLD hit list also included the biggest 3-letter .US sale we've ever seen - #13 (tie) AED.us at a cool $20,000

By Ron Jackson

The non .com gTLD's had only one representative on the chart this week but they made it count as it was one of the year's ten biggest sales in this category. The domain was a sweet geo, #4 (tie) Spain.net, that went for $40,000 in a deal handled by UpMarketDNs.com.

As usual the .coms dominated with 16 charted domains. The notable sales in this group included #3 DSAA.com that was sold to entertainment giant Disney for $50,000 in a private transaction. Earlier this year Disney announced a new digital video brand called Disney Studio All Access (DSAA) and that is undoubtedly why they wanted this acronym. DSAA was also the acronym for the Seattle based company that sold the domain, Dupre & Scott Apartment Advisors, Inc.

In addition to Sedo, two other venues had multiple chart entries this week. DomainMarket.com hit the Daily Double with #4 (tie) ProfessionalLiability.com at $40,000 and #15 Elarm.com at $20,000 while the AfternicDLS scored with a trio headed by #6 (tie) FatChance.com at $26,000. Also earning chart honors this week were Moniker/SnapNames with #20 (tie) Jeuxdefoot.com at $10,000 and WinnerNames.com with #20 (tie) TopChips.com, also at $10,000

Here's how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, July 24:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Country Codes

Sedo traditionally dominates the country code market but this week they really hit it out of the park with the biggest ccTLD sale of the year (by far) and a clean sweep of all 20 positions on our latest weekly Country Code Top 20 Sales Chart. Their headliner of course was Aktien.de ("stocks" in German) at a gargantuan $725,000.

Sedo also rang up five five-figure sales that we showed you in the all extension section earlier. The biggest ccTLD sales you haven't seen yet are #7 HandwerkerForum.de at $8,973 and #8 Advertising.eu at $8,264

Germany's popular .de extension had the most chart entries with nine, followed by Great Britain's .co.uk with three and the European Union's .eu with two. America's .us extension was among the others earning chart honors. #4 AED.us at $20,000 was the biggest .us sale reported so far this year.

Here is how the Country Code Top 20 stacked up for the week ending July 24:
