IFly.com Soars Into $65,000 Orbit To Give Sedo The
Week's Top Reported Sale

by Ron Jackson

They call Denver the Mile High City so it is appropriate that this week's highest altitude sale involved a company from the Rocky Mountain metropolis. Mike Schmitz jettisoned $65,000 at Sedo.com to acquire IFly.com and take the top spot on our new weekly Top Ten.  Mr. Schmitz told us the domain will be used for a new free air travel information site including maps & directions from his former employer, Mapquest, real-time flight arrivals and departures and airport weather among other features.

That was one of eight five-figure sales reported to us this week. SnapNames.com claimed three of those and also placed a fourth domain on the big board as they enjoyed their biggest week since switching to their new auction format. Snyder.com topped their winner's list after going for $18,900. Snyder is one of the 200 most popular surnames in America but with this domain new owner Russell Snyder of Mount Laurel, New Jersey has a way to really stand out in the Snyder crowd! SnapNames topped the 10K mark with two other domains; Detoxification.com at $10,200 and Flower.net at $10,100. Those placed 7th and 8th on our new chart.

Afternic.com had another box office hit this week with NewMovie.com going for $17,000 to place third on the list. Enom's Club Drop was next in line after netting $16,100 for PhoenixCollege.com. It looks like the buyer was the University of Phoenix (operators of a well-known chain of business colleges in America), as the URL now redirects to their original site. Sedo rounded out the first five with BVL.net at $12,500, an exceptionally strong price for a 3-letter .net.

.Com, .net and .org all made appearances on the big board this week. The .org entry comes from Moniker.com/DomainSystems.com where Erickson.org changed hands for $10,500. You'll also see that surname in an eye-popping new extension deal that is currently in the pipeline at Moniker. More on that a bit later in our New TLD report, but right now let's take a look at the complete Top Ten for the week ending Sunday, Oct. 17:

10. Phentermin.com $7,010 Enom Club Drop

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both.

As you can see SnapNames completed their quartet of top-ranked sales with 99cents.com #9 at $8,300. The domain has a steady flow of traffic (215 with the extension in Overture) and is a natural for any of the dollar store chains that are fixtures in local strip malls. Enom Club Drop anchored the Top Ten with their second entry, Phentermin.com (a common misspelling of the popular diet drug Phentermine) at $7,010.

Pool.com missed making the chart by just $10 this week after their top sale, GayStories.com, came in at an even $7,000. MySeen.com was just a hair behind at $6,850. That domain scores an impressive 1,977 in Overture with the extension. CapitolHill.com was also in the race for top honors after going for $6,500. WorldChampionshipOfPoker.com dealt Pool another winning hand at $4,000 and their feast continued with FoodBlog.com at $2,700.  AccountingServices.com and FannyMay.com each attracted $2,600 while TodaysThumbs.com tossed $2,500 in the pot and VMax.com added $2,300. In other extensions, Pool got $2,325 for Polska.net and $1,780 for Secinet.org.

Sedo complemented their #1 and #5 chart domains with a basket of goodies flavored with a variety of extensions. Handyonline.de ("cell online" in German) was the richest treat, going for 4,250 ($5,320). Another German country code domain, Arzneihandel.de ("drug trading") went for 2,500 ($3,129) while one from neighboring Austria, Reisepreise.at ("travel price") sailed in at 3,000 ($3,755). Back in familiar CNO territory, Kontaktlinsen.com ("contact lenses" in German) cleared 4,000 ($5,006) with Agentur.net ("agency") just a step behind at 3,900 ($4,882). LoveLife.org chimed in with 2,488 ($3,114) while Horreur.com ("horror" in French) scared up another 2,000 ($2,503).

Afternic added to their hit list with Hitch.com at $5,500, N7.com at $4,200 and PrepaidCellPhoneCards.com at $2,888. Enom's Club Drop had a nice group in that same 2K-6K range headed by AmericanHondaFinance.com at $5,767. They added $4,307 for GoGoVacations.com, $3,607 for NewEconomy.com and $2,830 for GiftExchange.com

SnapNames took nearly half of the Top Ten this week and that wasn't the end of their story. They also sold Stumps.com for $5,400 (imagine what full trees must be worth in .com!), Race.net for $1,801 and AmericanMarketing.com for $1,600. In a private sale, Luis Villaverde of Twips.com sold Coches.org ("cars" in Spanish) for 2,000 ($2,503).

*****

IFly.com taxied into the 23rd spot on our Year To Date chart after going for $65,000 this week. Appropriately enough that 65K expanded our list to 65 positions.  Here is the complete rundown of big winners so far in 2004:

New TLD Section

The big week at SnapNames extended into the new extensions. Their $2,001 sale of Portfolio.info gave the popular auction house the top spot on our New TLD Great 8. That was one of a quartet of four-figure sales this week, three of them .infos and the other a .us. 3-letter domains continue to command high prices. TheNameStore.com's Dale Porter collected 1,000 ($1,252) for the runner-up domain, IRO.info. Silk.us slipped into third place at 938 ($1,174) and was the first of four domains Sedo placed on the new list.

I had the week's other reported four-figure sale, OnAir.info at an even $1,000. I continue to see growing demand among my small business clients for new TLD domains. By the end of the week I expect to receive payment for another four-figure transaction involving OSI.biz which is being purchased by a mid-sized office supply company. Having watched these end user sales increase month after month for the past year, I have absolutely no doubt that .info, .biz and .us will continue to gain converts at the grass roots level (and with small business accounting for 70% of the economy there is a huge opportunity there that should not be overlooked).

All three extensions appear on this week's chart, but .info gets the lion's share again with 6 of the 8 positions. Here is a look at the complete New TLD list for the week ending Oct. 17:

8. Wals.info

While prices on the second half of the chart were soft this week a real new extension eye opener may be in the offing. Moniker/DomainSystems tells us they are close to completing a $7,500 deal for Erickson.info. The buyer is likely to be the same party that just acquired Erickson.org from Moniker/DS for $10,500. That would easily be the highest sale of a surname in a new extension and would also rank among the 10 best overall new TLD sales this year.

Our Year-To-Date New TLD Top 30 Chart remains unchanged this week as no domains met the $4,000 entry price. Here are all of the top reported new extension sales through Oct. 17:

As always, we welcome all verifiable sales reports from companies, private sellers or individuals with knowledge of an important sale made through any channel. To contribute information and help make this column better,  just drop a note to [email protected].

We truly appreciate the industry leading companies represented on our charts who share their sales information with us to help everyone in the business get a handle on current domain values. Individuals like Richard Meyer of the American Marketing Corporation also provide invaluable help by sending us data for these sales reports each week.

Every Tuesday we publish the highest reported domain name sales for the previous week. On Monday our contributors send us their sales data for the previous 7 days. We then compile that information and write this report for Tuesday publication to give you the freshest sales report in the industry.

We will close with this standard caution. These are not average selling prices - these are top selling domains. One of the biggest impediments to making sales is pricing domains at unrealistic levels. For most of us, pricing domains at the levels achieved on the Top Ten chart will leave us waiting a long time to make a sale! We hope you will use the information presented here as a measuring stick that will help you price your domains at levels that will put more money in your pocket more often!
