Holy Cow! Seller Milks Cow.com For Over $45,000 at Ebay to Lead New DNJournal Top Ten

by Ron Jackson

Spring break is over and the buyers were back out in force this past week. Last week only 3 entries on our Top Ten hit five figures (the lowest number at that level this year), but this week every name on our Big Board topped the 10K mark. Someone must have told investors to keep spending until the cows come home and that's just what they did. When the dust settled, Cow.com was standing on top of the heap after going for $45,400 at Ebay. High dollar sales are often questioned at Ebay but this one was on the level.

Sedo.com, Afternic.com, Great Domains and SnapNames.com each rang up a pair of chart winners this week. Sedo landed the #2 domain, collecting $27,000 for Rapid.com. They also had the only non-.com on this week's list, #7 Amateurs.co.uk, which hustled up 8,000 ($15,173). Afternic has been on a hot streak lately. Last week they bagged two of the top three domains and this week they came right back with two of the top five. They scored with one of the nicest pairs this side of GoDaddy Girl Candice Michelle, IncentiveProgram.com and IncentivePrograms.com at $20,000 each. That set tied for 4th, a step ahead of Qigong.com (one of the two SnapNames entries) which went for $17,750. Qigong is an ancient Chinese methodology for health, therapy, and longevity.

The twin bill at GreatDomains included #3 Screen.com at $25,000. New York's Sinatra Productions was the buyer. Company chief Stephen Sinatra told us they have just started accumulating premium domains so it's unlikely we have heard the last of them. We have many more solid sales to tell you about, but first let's take a look at the complete Top Ten for the week ending April 10:

10. IndianWells.com $10,697 SnapNames

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both.

A pair of $11,000 domains tied at #8 to help round out our new chart. Pool.com took WWB.com to the bank while GreatDomains cleaned up with Janitors.com.  SnapNames held the anchor position after collecting $10,697 for #10 IndianWells.com. In addition to their two Top Ten entries, SnapNames piled up at least a dozen other notable sales. PlasmaScreen.com displayed $7,277, NewOrleansRestaurant.com served up $6,550 and OnlinePsychics.com channeled $6,266

The SnapNames hit parade continued with Highbury.com at $5,300, Ariva.com at $5,200 and Gobi.com at $4,800. ResearchReports.com uncovered another $4,500 and $4,050 flowed from PlumbingFixture.com. EasyChoice.com added $1,975 and ClothesPin.com secured $1,270. In other extensions, TBG.net brought $2,400 and Survivor.org earned $1,284.

Similar good news flowed from Sedo's office. They hit a lot of .de's (German country code domains) out of the park. Tulpen.de ("tulips" in German) went for 6,000 ($7,750), 123Nachhilfe.de ("123 tutor") brought 5,750 ($7,426) and Sprachferien.de ("language holiday") added 5,000 ($6,458). Ratgeber-Scheidung.de ("divorce advice") and Grundstcke.de ("property") landed another 4,000 ($5,166) each. Sedo also scored with three more .coms. Facemasks.com fetched 6,000 ($7,750) while TravelGuru.com and ChubCity.com commanded $5,000 each.

The water was inviting at Pool this week as well. ChristmasGiftBaskets.com delivered $6,371 and a high traffic misspelling, Encylcopedia.com (353 with the extension in Overture) booked $5,600. UpYours.com plunked down $3,938, CingularWireless.com called in $3,667 and WebhostGuide.com rang up $3,200. MrFixit.com collected $3,200, MegaRewards.com returned $2,600, EquineMassage.com squeezed out $2,000 and SeekJesus.com served up $1,350. A nice one-word .net, Honesty.net, added another $2,050.

Continuing around the horn, at Enom's Club Drop, CouponNetwork.com led the way at $7,800. Exhausts.com blew out another $5,100 while MyFreeze.com collected a cool $4,400. OptimalHealth.com glowed at $2,300, followed by MyLeads.com ($1,700) and a pair at $1,400; MagicStick.com and FirstFedOnline.com

At Moniker.com/DomainSystems.com, LightMart.com lit up the scoreboard with $7,525. Debt-Consolidation.com added $5,700 and CashClaims.com collected $4,300

PinkHoney.com sweetened the bottom line at DotcomAgency.com with $4,000. DealingDesk.com dealt another $3,780 and HelpButton.com answered with $3,200. Ian Andrew's company is having a nice run this year. Last week SalesIncentives.com was on our Top Ten after selling for $10,500 at Afternic. We didn't mention it at the time but DotcomAgency was the seller who placed that listing at Afternic.

Afternic's sales this week weren't limited to their two Top Ten entries. Speegle.com and InternetSoftware.com each brought in $3,000 and ExpressCheckout.com zipped through the line with $2,488. NewFunds.com added $2,100, ComputerFix.com chipped in $1,800 and Henkdevelde.com contributed $1,575

In one other deal worth noting, Richard Kligman of the Kligman Group sold FlowersAreUs.com for $2,000 at DNForum.com

****

Our Year-To-Date chart gets six new members this week even though we are bumping the entry level up to $16,000 to keep the list at a manageable length. 14 domains scrolled off as a result but you can still see those and all other sales from $10,000 and up in the opening quarter of this year on this expanded chart. We will post expanded sales lists every quarter for those who like to track all five figure and up sales. Here are the biggest winners to so far in 2005:

New TLD Section

Last week there were only three 5-figure sales on our mainstream chart while the new extension list remained steady. This week the tables were turned and the new TLD's took the biggest dive we've seen since we started tracking them. In fact only three sales total were reported to us this week, all .infos sold at Sedo, and none of them cracked four figures. That left an unprecedented five vacancies on the chart.

I'm sure this week will prove to be an anomaly (as the very low number of high ticket old extension sales was last week). However, if you are involved in the new TLD market and you want people to have an accurate indicator of the health of this sector, be sure to let us know when you have verifiable sales you can report. The leading sale this week was a nice one-worder, Claim.info at $969. Here's a look at the lonely trio on this week's new extension list:

It shows all new extension sales from $1,000 up in the first quarter of 2005. We will update that expanded chart every quarter so you can track lower level sales that scroll off our weekly chart as the year progresses and we raise the entry point on that list. As always, we welcome all verifiable sales reports from companies, private sellers or individuals with knowledge of an important sale made through any channel. To contribute information and help make this column better,  just drop a note to [email protected].

We truly appreciate the industry leading companies represented on our charts who share their sales information with us to help everyone in the business get a handle on current domain values. Individuals like Richard Meyer of the American Marketing Corporation also provide invaluable help by sending us data for these sales reports each week.

Every Tuesday we publish the highest reported domain name sales for the previous week. On Monday our contributors send us their sales data for the previous 7 days. We then compile that information and write this report for Tuesday publication to give you the freshest sales report in the industry.

We will close with this standard caution. These are not average selling prices - these are top selling domains. One of the biggest impediments to making sales is pricing domains at unrealistic levels. For most of us, pricing domains at the levels achieved on the Top Ten chart will leave us waiting a long time to make a sale! We hope you will use the information presented here as a measuring stick that will help you price your domains at levels that will put more money in your pocket more often!

Editor's Note: If you wish to review previous Domain Sales columns, they are available in our Archive.
