Veteran
Domain Industry Executive Paul Nicks Retiring
After 18 Groundbreaking Years at GoDaddy |
|
One of
the most influential people in the domain
investing world, Paul
Nicks, has decided it's time to step
back and enjoy some of his favorite things in
life after 18 years in leadership roles at
industry giant GoDaddy.
Paul made the announcement in a LinkedIn post
Thursday, writing "Hanging up my 9-5 hat for now and setting
off to enjoy an early retirement. I've been in one
job or another since I was 14 years old, I
figure it's time to sit back and enjoy the spoils
a bit." Most recently Paul has been
serving as Vice President, Domain Investors
at GoDaddy after previous stints as President
(Domains), VP (Aftermarket) and several
other roles dating back to 2007 when he first
joined the company as its Aftermarket Development
Manager. During
his time at GoDaddy Paul has had a huge impact on
the domain investment field by ramping up
recognition, services, support and personal
interaction with the professional domain
investment community. That has included GoDaddy's
invaluable sponsorship and support for the Internet
Commerce Association (the non-profit
organization that fights to protect domain owner's
rights). Paul himself served on the ICA Board of
Directors but will now step down with his return
to private life. |

If
you read our Cover
Story about Paul that was published in
December 2022, you will know that seeing him stay
in one place for 18 years like he did at GoDaddy
was the last thing any of his friends and
family (and, I suspect, even Paul himself) would
have expected. He grew up in a variety of cities
scattered across the country and attended 7
different colleges (that is not a typo)!
In
the final section of that story Paul talked
about how much he loved to travel.
"I’ve been fortunate enough to go to
conferences all around the U.S. and the
rest of the world as well as visiting
GoDaddy offices spread around the globe,"
Paul said. He added, "A quote from Mark
Twain hangs on my wall (thanks to a very
thoughtful gift from my wife) that sums up
my feelings well: “Travel
is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and
narrow-mindedness, and many of our
people need it sorely on these accounts.
Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men
and things cannot be acquired by vegetating
in one little corner of the earth all
one’s lifetime.” So,
it's probably a safe bet that Paul will
be back on the road soon (if he isn't
already). He will surely be missed but while
wishing him "Happy Trails," we
also took note of two words in his
retirement announcement, "for now." Roads don't always
run in a straight line. They can be a
circle too. Either way, I'm sure this is
one traveling man we will be hearing
from again. |
