Worldwide Domain Registrations Rocket to New Record With Verisign Reporting 411.6 Million Names Taken Across All TLDs

VeriSign, (the administrator of the .com and .net  TLDs) has released their latest quarterly Domain Name Industry Brief (DNIB) covering the 3rd quarter of 2026. The total number of domain registrations across all TLDs worldwide soared in the latest quarter with 9.9 million names added since the end of 2Q, bringing the global total to a record 411.6 million registered domains. 33 million domains have been added year over year, a healthy jump of 8.7%.

.Com, by far, the dominant TLD on the Internet, ended the latest quarter with 169.8 million registered domains, up 10.4 million YOY, a 6.3% increase since the same point a year ago. Meanwhile, .Net continued to tread water with a slight rise from 12.5 million registrations last year to 12.6 million at the end of 2Q-2026.

ccTLDs finished the latest quarter with 151.4 million registrations, 6.6 million more than a year ago, representing a 4.6% increase YOY - a full point higher than last year's percentage growth rate.

New gTLDs, working from a smaller user base, continued to rack up impressive gains percentage wise. With 56.6 million registrations at the end of 3Q-2026, the new G's were up a sizzling 32% after adding 13.7 million domains over the past year.

For legacy gTLDs not including .com and .net (a group dominated by .org that also includes older TLDs that were released prior to the beginning of ICANN's new gTLD program in 2012 like .info and .biz), registrations stood at 21.1 million at the end of the latest quarter. That is up 2.2 million domains which translates to a nice double digit increase of 11.5% year over year.

More information, including comprehensive gTLD historical data, visualizations of long-term trends and regional ccTLD data, is available on DNIB.com’s Global Domain Name Base Trends dashboard. Expanded data and visualizations for renewal percentages, renewals and new registrations are available on DNIB.com’s gTLD Registration and Renewal Trends dashboard.
