iReport.com
Rockets to Top Spot on the 2008 Domain Sales Chart After
$750,000 Sale to CNN
By now you have almost certainly heard the news
that we broke on January 17 when we reported that Rick Schwartz
had closed a deal with the Cable News Network to sell them iReport.com
for $750,000. Shortly after that sale, the biggest by far of
the New Year, we were off to cover the DOMAINfest Global conference
in Hollywood, California (our comprehensive show wrap-up
article will be published on our home page by the end of the
week). Due to that commitment there was no sales column last
week, so iReport.com has been waiting in the wings since our last
column two weeks ago to ascend the sales throne (a proper analogy
given that T.R.A.F.F.I.C.
conference co-founder Schwartz is widely known as the Domain King).
You can get more details on this
blockbuster sale directly from the horse's mouth as Schwartz wrote
about it on his personal
blog January 22. While iReport.com takes its place at
the top of the chart this week we will also be bringing you up to
date on all of the sales reported since our last column
January 15. To make room for the double dose of domain sales, we are
expanding all of our charts to 30 positions this week.
By Ron Jackson
Moniker.com
closed another six-figure sale by completing the transaction for MaturePorn.com
at $130,000 after they had auctioned off that name at the Internext
Expo in Las Vegas earlier this month. NameJet.com
occupies the #3 slot with GreenMonday.com at $76,500,
but Sedo.com
won the overall numbers game by placing 13 on the Big
Board, including #4 SEO.de (German ccTLD) at €48,000
($70,896). That was one of eight country code domains on the
all-extension elite list and Sedo accounted for 7 of the 8. Two of
those ccTLD sales were German IDN's; Städte.de ("cities"
in German) and Länder.de ("countries" in German)at €11,100 ($16,395)
each.
#5 ChefUniforms.com cooked up a $65,000
treat in a private sale (the singular version #12 ChefUniform.com,
provided a tasty appetizer at $20,000). The AfternicDLSlogged six names on the leader board, with #6 VeteransLoans.com
topping their roster at $35,000. Overall, .com claimed
19 of the 30 chart entries. With country codes taking eight more
that left just three openings. Two of those went to .nets and
one to .mobi.
We don't chart business sales, but it is
worth nothing that a big developed ccTLD website also changed hands
this week when Media CorpacquiredSport.co.uk for £135,000 ($268,459).
Here is how all of the top sellers stacked up for the
two week period ending Sunday, January 27:

Keep in mind that these are the highest
value sales that have been reported to us in the
past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool,
not a complete list documenting ALL high
value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce
because many sales are kept private at the insistence of
buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the
accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.
Forthe many newcomers entering the domain
industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market.
If you do not understand why specific domain names command the
prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases.
We highly recommend that you do some basic research beforeyou buyanything! As a starting point we have
built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.
There were two more five-figure sales just off the
chart and Sedo accounted for both of those; Anpfiff.de ($10,634) and SoundAndFury.com
($10,000).

Global Contenders
(.biz, .info, .mobi, .net & .org)
.Mobi topped the Global Contenders
chart this week with Sedo's $15,500 sale of MyMobile.mobi.
However, only one other .mobi made the expanded GC Top 30
this week. The lion's share of the chart went to .net with 16
entries, including #2 Lumber.net ($12,000) and #3 Ordinateur.net
($11,376).
The top three sales all appeared on the all
extension leader board you saw earlier. The top GC slae you haven't
seen is #4 Glasses.org, sold for $8,300 at NameJet.
That was one of a dozen .orgs on the GC leader board.
Here's how all of the Global Contenders stacked up for the
two week period ending

Country Codes
A huge .de (German ccTLD) sale led the
way in the Country Code race this week. As you saw earlier on the
all-extension leader board, SEO.de sold for €48,000 ($70,896)
at Sedo in what is the biggest cctLD sale of the new year by
far. That was one of nine .de sales on the expanded Country Code Top
30, more than any other extension.
The top eight names on the ccTLD list all made the
all extension Top 30. We also told you about the five-figure sale of
#9 Anpfiff.de earlier. The top sale you haven't heard about
is #10 Mike.ca, picked up by Mike Ber for personal use
for $8,006 through MyID.ca.
That was one of six solid .ca (Canadian ccTLD) sales on the
elite list, the highest being RR.ca at $15,811.
In addition to Germany and Canada, four other
countries charted multiple domains this week; Great Briatin
(.co.uk), France (.fr), Tuvalu (.tv) and the United
States (.us). Here's how all of the country code leaders stacked up for
the two weeks ending January 27:
