Four
Six-Figure Sales in One Week Including One of the Year's Ten
Biggest? Do Tell!
It was another very nice week for
the domain aftermarket with some of the year's biggest sales keeping
the summer doldrums at bay. The top gun this time out - Tell.com
- rang up a remarkable $400,000 at Sedo.com
in a deal that ranks among the ten biggest so
far in 2008.
The runner-up domain on the all-extension
leader board (expanded to 30 positions again this week) also ranks
as the year's fourth biggest country code sale. That is Auto.es,
a ccTLD representing Spain that banked a whopping €110,000
($173,682), also at Sedo, in the biggest .es sale we have seen
to date.
There were two more six-figure sales on
the Big Board, #3 246.com ($124,568.00 in a private
sale) and #4 MoneyRates.com ($100,000 at the AfternicDLS).
By Ron Jackson
T.J.
Demas
You may have noticed that I added
two digits after the decimal point for 246.com
and did the same with #5 E8.com
which sold for $88,888.88. There is a reason for that
related to a special symmetry that the new owner of those
domains is building into an ambitious new project.
Both names were purchased by the same buyer, T.J.
Demas of Aspen, Colorado, who gave me the
background on them Monday night (June 30, which happens to
have been the 100th anniversary of the Tunguska
explosion that devastated over 800 square miles
of Russian wilderness in 1908. That mysterious event plays a
role too). T.J. is not yet ready to publicly reveal his
exact plans for these domains (and a group of others he has
acquired) but I can tell you that he has a completely unique
and fascinating game plan that will reveal itself as time
goes on. For those who are especially inquisitive, some
clues have been posted on the domains he has been acquiring.
This would have been an even bigger week if
the sale price of Pizza.com was not subject to a non
disclosure agreement. Yes, the name has finally changed hands after
being auctioned off three months ago on Sedo's GreatDomains
site. You might recall that the winning bid in that auction was $2.6
million, but the high bidder never paid. Sedo kept working the
name and a change in the WhoIs record this week shows it has gone to
Philadelphia firm National A-1, giving them a nice
addition to an already phenomenal .com portfolio. Though none of the
parties to the sale; Sedo, the buyer or the seller, would release
details on the transaction, I have seen information that indicates
the price paid was $1.6 million (or something very close to
that figure). That is not official so we can't chart it but I have
good reason to believe the figure is accurate.
In the race among venues, Sedo led with ten
chart entries. The AfternicDLS
was also very strong with six positions at this high end of the
market, even though their primary focus is on small to medium sized
businesses who typically buy in the mid four-figure range (a
category they dominate week in and week out). Moniker also appears
six times with five more completed sales from their T.R.A.F.F.I.C.
East live auction in May and another from their everyday
platform.
.Com claimed 20 of the 30 positions
on the elite list with five spots going to ccTLDs, two each
to .net and .org and one to .biz. The country
code group included one of the best .pl (Poland) sales we
have seen, #8 Deser.pl ("dessert" in Polish), sold
at Sedo for €22,000 ($34,736). Here is how all of the top sellers stacked up for the
week ending Sunday, June 29:

Keep in mind that these are the highest
value sales that have been reported to us in the
past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool,
not a complete list documenting ALL high
value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce
because many sales are kept private at the insistence of
buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the
accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.
Forthe many newcomers entering the domain
industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market.
If you do not understand why specific domain names command the
prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases.
We highly recommend that you do some basic research beforeyou buyanything! As a starting point we have
built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.
There were four more five-figure sales just off the
chart with three of those being .mobi domains sold in the
Moniker/T.R.A.F.F.I.C. East auction; Sales.mobi ($10,500), Ringtone.mobi

AfternicDLS moved Nembu.com for $10,000.

(.biz, .info, .mobi, .net & .org)
The top four names on our Global ContendersTop 20 chart all earned spots on the all extension leader
board you saw earlier. We also told you about the trio of
five-figure .mobi domains, part of a group of seven .mobis on
the GC Top 20, all of which were sold in the Moniker/T.R.A.F.F.I.C.
East auction. The top names you haven't seen are Ringtone.mobi
and Men.mobi, tied for 6th at $9,500 each.
.Net charted six domains while .org
and .info had three each. The final opening went to .biz
with #4 Immobilienmakler.biz ("real estate broker" in German),
a name that sold for €8,330 ($13,152) at Sedo. The .info
roster was led by a nice geo domain, #10 Michigan.info at $9,250.

Country Codes
The country codes just keep on rocking. After
a huge week last week, the ccTLDs came right backwith the
fourth biggest sale recorded so far in 2008, Auto.es (Spain's
country code) at €110,000 ($173,682). That domain was
followed by a quartet of solid five-figure sales (all of which also
made the all extension leader board at the top of this report.
Sedo continued their dominance of the country code
category claiming 19 of 21 chart entries (the extra spot resulted
from a tie for the final position) and they swept the top
ten.
We saw our first .asia aftermarket sales this
week with #15 AirNZ.asia going for $3,000 and Hunters.asia
adding $2,500. Here is how all of the ccTLD top sellers stack
