Editor's Note: Our weekly domain sales report normally comes out every Wednesday afternoon, however this week I will be flying all day Wednesday, en route to the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. conference in Las Vegas. As a result, this week's column will be moved back one day. We expect to have the new column posted here by 1pm U.S. Eastern time on Thursday (Jan. 21).

Blockbuster French ccTLD Sale at Sedo Gets the 2010 Domain Sales Season Off on the Right Foot

The New Year's first full week of domain sales is now in the books. Sedo helped get 2010 off to a rousing start by closing a huge €587,500 ($851,875) sale of Credit.fr (French ccTLD). That sale also served notice that the surge in country code sales that we've seen over the past couple of years is not likely to subside any time soon. The Credit.fr sale is more than three times higher than the top ccTLD sale reported in all of 2009. That was Spel.se ("games" in Swedish), sold last June for $266,000 - also by Sedo.

Sedo went on to sweep 11 of the 20 entries on our new weekly Top 20 Sales Chart. Their roster included a sale they worked in conjunction with Moniker.com to complete - #2 Migraine.com at $125,000 - as well as two more ccTLDs - both of which are European Union IDNs - #15 Südtirol.eu at $14,355 and #18 Möbel.eu at $13,195.

Sedo also had the largest of the three non .com gTLDs on the Big Board - #10 QE.org at $20,000 (Congratulations to the seller - a long time acquaintance of ours - Donald "Biggie" Williams).

By Ron Jackson

The AfternicDLS had another solid outing, taking three places on the elite list. Their roster was led by #7 Vivant.com at $30,000. Moniker.com was the only other venue with multiple chart entries. They hit the trifecta, sharing the Migraine.com sale with Sedo and well as booking #8 V247.com ($25,350) and #11 PersianServers2.com ($17,900) on their own.

That left four openings on the all-extension leader board that were taken by NameJet.com, GoDaddy Auctions, Bido.com and Optimo.com. NameJet set the pace for that quartet after getting a $69,100 dividend from their sale of #3 FirstNationalBank.com. The always powerful .com contingent piled up 14 of the 20 chart entries.

Here is how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 10:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Country Codes

The country codes continue to enjoy a boom that started a couple of years ago and there is no sign that they are going to slow down any time soon. As we noted at the top of this report, this week's €587,500 ($851,875) sale of Credit.fr is far bigger than any country code sale reported in 2009.

The top three sales in the ccTLD category also made the all extension leader board you saw above. We also told you about two other five-figure sales; CasinoItalia.it (Italian ccTLD) and Home.ch (Switzerland ccTLD) that went for $11,600 each.

The highest sale in this category that you haven't seen yet is an IDN at #6 on our new Top 20 Country Code Chart - Müller.eu at $9,570. Sedo handled that sale and went on to sweep all 20 positions on the leader board!

In the race among extensions, the European Union's .eu and Germany's .de shared the lead by taking four places apiece. The United States country code, .us, was next with three. Three of the four .eu domains on the chart are IDNs.

Here is how the country code leaders stacked up for the week ending Jan. 10:

Global Contenders (Non .com gTLDs: .biz, .info, .mobi, .net, .org, .pro & .tel)

A nice 2-letter .org - QE.org - led the non .com gTLD Global Contenders race this week after changing hands for $20,000 at Sedo. That was one of four five-figure GC sales we told you about at the top of this report. The highest sale you haven't seen in this category yet is #5 NursingScholarships.org at $5,900 via Sedo. Sedo wound up taking 10 of the 20 positions on our new Global Contenders Top 20 Chart.

This was an exceptionally strong week for the .orgs which swept the first five positions and took eight places overall. The .nets still managed to pile up the most chart entries with nine though. That left three open spots that were taken by a .pro, a .mobi and a .info. Scoring highest in that trio was #6 Consulting.pro at $5,075.
