Sedo Completes Biggest Domain Sale Ever Reported as Sex.com Closes at $13 Million

This will go down as a landmark week in domain history. Sex.com has officially changed hands for $13 million in the largest cash domain sale ever reported. After a three-month search Sedo.com broker Jeff Gabriel found a buyer - Clover Holdings - for the domain on behalf of Escom who had to let it go in accordance with an order issued by the United States Bankuptcy Court for the Central District of California.

Sedo said Escom had paid $11.5 million for the domain in 2006. However that deal involved both cash and equity according to Gary Kremen, who sold the domain to Escom. In our March 2006 Cover Story about Kremen and the ordeal he went through with Sex.com (published just a few weeks after he had sold the domain) Kremen told us it was a cash/stock deal worth at least $12 million and possibly a good deal more if the domain performed well for its new owners. Unfortunately it did not and wound up in bankruptcy.

By Ron Jackson

Regardless of the terms of the 2006 deal, at its latest cash sales price Sex.com reigns as the new all time cash sales leader, knocking Fund.com (sold for $9,999,950 in 2008) out of the top spot.

I learned about an interesting $238,000 sale of a four-character domain this week but due to a non-disclosure agreement I cannot reveal the name. However, the buyer did agree to let me tell you that the first character in the string is a "4" followed by three letters. That is the highest sale I've ever seen for a domain with a 4 prefix. The 4tunate seller was Brett Robbins. I checked out his sales documentation and also confirmed it with the buyer (who is well known in the industry) to verify that this deal actually happened.

That big Sex.com sale helped Sedo register a phenomenal week as they went on to sweep 18 of the 20 positions on out latest weekly all extension Top 20 Sales Chart, including all of the top ten. Their roster included #2 Adhoc.com at $87,750, #3 WebEngine.com at $50,000 and #4 DesignContest.com at $40,000.

Only the AfternicDLS prevented Sedo from running the table. They scored with #12 DNB.net at $18,388. and #19 AsbestosLawyer.net at $12,500. That DNB.net sale was one of three posted by the non .com gTLDs (all three beings .nets).

The Country Codes also has three representatives on the Big Board, led by an IDN, #7 Hämorrhoiden.de at $26,287. The others were #10 Diapers.co.in (Indian ccTLD) and a second German country code domain, #11 LTD.de at $18,900.

Here is how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, Nov. 14:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.
