Two Six-Figure Sales Totaling Over $867,000 Top This Week's Domain Sales Chart

The four-day Thanksgiving weekend gave most Americans a very short work week last week but the domain aftermarket continued full steam ahead, producing two of the year's 30 biggest sales to date. In a private transaction the owners of HomeInsurance.com reported they have acquired HomeOwnersInsurance.com for a whopping $570,000 - the 11th biggest cash sale reported for far in 2010.

The AfternicDLS weighed in with another six-figure blockbuster as they completed the $297,500 sale of Hobbies.com. That ranks as the #26 sale year to date and it the biggest 2010 sale reported by the AfternicDLS, topping a pair of $250,000 sales they logged in February for Biking.com and Boating.com.

By Ron Jackson

HomeOwnersInsurance.com and Hobbies.com easily led our latest weekly all extension Top 20 Sales Chart. At $43,500, the #3 domain, Wuye.com, was a quarter of a million dollars behind the domain above it. However that sale at Sedo.com kicked off a huge run for that popular venue as they swept 10 consecutive positions and went on to take 16 of 20 places on the Big Board overall.

Sedo's roster included all eight of the country code domains that muscled their way onto the elite list, including a trio that landed on the top half of the leader board; #5 Like.me ($26,500), #7 Yoyo.it ($23,400) and #10 Contacts.me ($15,600). .ME represents Montenegro but is available for worldwide registration. .IT is the ccTLD for Italy. After being featured in a special Sedo auction a total of five .ME domains made the Top 20.

The .coms still managed to take the most chart entries, accounting for all 12 of the remaining positions. That left the non .com gTLDs out in the cold. None from  that category even reached the five-figure mark this week.

Here is how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, Nov. 28:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Country Codes

Thanks to a successful featured auction at Sedo.com, .ME took the country code spotlight this week. The extension led our new Country Code Top 20 Chart with Like.me at $26,500 and went on to sweep five of the first seven positions on the leader board and eight places overall.

There were eight five-figure ccTLD sales reported this week. We noted all of those in the all extension section earlier. The highest county code sale you haven't seen yet is #9 Pigeon.ru (Russian ccTLD) at $9,988 via Sedo. Sedo wound up claiming all 22 positions on the chart (the extra places resulted from a three-way tie for the final spot). It is not the first time they have had a clean sweep in the ccTLD category but it is still a remarkable feat.

While .ME had the most chart entries, Germany's .DE also, as always, did well, taking five places on the elite list inlcuding #10 (tie) Schularbeiten.de at $9,100. Vlinder.nl (Dutch ccTLD) tied for that 10th position.

Here is how the ccTLD Top 20 stacked up for the week ending Nov. 28:

Global Contenders (Non .com gTLDs: .biz, .info, .mobi, .net, .org, .asia, .pro & .tel)

This was an especially slow week for the non .com gTLDs as they had no reported sales above the four-figure level. Like.org mustered the best sale in this category, earning $9,420 via Moniker/SnapNames. The non .com gTLDs have been lagging behind the .coms and ccTLDs for a couple of years now but they have always had at least a sale or two in the five-figure range.

Sedo had the most charted sales in this category taking 12 of the 20 positions on our new Global Contenders Top 20 list including 8 of the first 10. #2 Yoyo.asia led their roster at $8,000 and #3 Strategic.net added $7,500. The AfternicDLS also had a strong outing with five names on the elite list, led by #7 VCM.org at $5,400

The .nets had nine representatives on the leader board, barely edging .org's eight. .Asia, .pro and .info had one name each in the Top 20. Here's how all of the Global Contenders stacked up for the week ending Nov. 28:
