Trio of Six-Figure Sales Spearhead Another Solid Week For the Domain Market

Three six-figure sales and rumors of a pair of seven-figure blockbusters headline the past week's activity in the domain aftermarket. Let's get the rumored sales out of the way first. Actually, one of those - the sale of iCloud.com to Apple Computer - has now been completed. Unfortunately, Apple and the seller (Swedish company Xcerion) have declined to confirm the rumored price of "about $4.5 million" cited by the GigaOM.com, who was the first to report Apple had acquired the name.

The second pending blockbuster deal involves Gambling.com which has reportedly been sold by Media Corp. to an unidentified buyer for £1.5 Million (a little over $2.47 million at today's exchange rate) in a deal brokered by Sedo. However, that transaction has not closed yet (Sedo told me today that some escrow payments still have to be paid) and the domain continues to lead to Media Corp's existing site.

This one is expected to close, however this may have to be considered more than a domain only sale as Media Corp. said the transaction includes "the Gambling.com domain name and website." This is a fully developed business property that, if left in place by the buyer, would represent a second asset for the price being paid.

By Ron Jackson

On the other hand, muddyng the water a bit, Media Corp. said it will retain intellectual property, customer databases and infrastructure assets that will be redirected to the company's online gaming business at PurpleLounge.com. So, we will have to take a closer look at this deal when it closes before making a final call.

Now let's get to the big deals that did close over the past week, led by the trio of six-figure sales at the top of the chart. Sedo claimed the pole position with their $220,000 sale of Consolidation.com and rang up a second sale at this level with #3 MAI.com at $119,200

Sandwiched in between those two was DearSales.com (Update: after this column was published we learned that this domain as part of a larger portfolio sale and was not an individual domain sale. As such it is not eligible for our charts).

The .coms enjoyed an unusually dominant week, sweeping 19 of the 20 chart entries. The only exception was a lone ccTLD, #16 Tada.de, sold by Sedo for $16,390. Sedo turned in a powerhouse performance of their own, claiming 14 chart positions, including 8 of the first 10. Nokta Domains was the only other venue with multiple chart entries, taking three places with a group led by #9 Prezervatif.com at $30,000.

The new Toby Clements Newsletter made its first chart appearance this week with the $15,000 sale of #17 (tie) GirlFights.com. YummyNames and the AfternicDLS also teamed up to make one of the four sales in that logjam at #17 - Telematic.com (also $15,000 or course).

Here's how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, May 1:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.
