Less Is More - Minus.com Takes Top Spot on This Week's Sales Chart After Changing Hands for Six Figures

Owning Minus.com turned out to be a big plus for Denver-based domain investor Brian Wick. He just banked $115,000 for the domain in a private transaction. Wick said the name was purchased by a math education business with a presence in both the U.S. and Japan. That sale leads our new weekly Top 20 Domain Sales Chart, easily outdistancing two names that tied for the #2 spot at $50,000 each. Those are Minsk.com (sold through Sedo) and Trippy.com (sold by Michael Mann's DomainMarket.com).

Sedo went on to sweep 16 of the 21 chart entries (the extra spot resulted from a tie for the final position) including six of the top ten. They placed 10 ccTLDs on the all extension leader board, giving the country codes on the of their best outings of the year, topping even the .coms who had nine representatives on the elite list.

#7 RH.de led the ccTLD onslaught at $19,738, with two others also reaching the top ten; #8 FLO.at (Austrian ccTLD) at $16,500 and #10 Domains.in (Indian ccTLD) at $15,000. Another one of Sedo's charted country code domains was also an IDN. #15 Getreidemühlen.de (German ccTLD) delivered $12,674.

By Ron Jackson

Two non .com gTLDs also made the chart and neither was an extension you often see on the Big Board where .nets and .orgs normally dominate this category. This time out the standard bearers were #17 (tie) Emerson.mobi at $9,500 and #20 (tie) POF.asia at $8,000. Sedo handled both of those sales.

Sedo also closed a huge developed website sale this week - Gambling.com at $2.5 million. I gave you the details on that impending transaction back in May and noted then that it appeared to be a developed website business sale rather than a domain only transaction. We had to wait until the transfer was completed to see if the buyer was going to retain the original site and business or start over from scratch and as expected they have kept the existing website (developed by seller Media Corp.) in place.

Three other venues earned chart honors this week. CAX.com claimed the #6 spot with a $25,000 sale of Zovi.com. The AfternicDLS rang up the #9 sale - Falko.com at $16,050 and the Toby Clements Newsletter bagged a share of #20 with MYD.com at $8,000

Here's how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, July 10:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

At Sedo the winners included Phosagro.com at $7,000 and two others at $5,500 each; HBDS.com and Oakie.com. Another pair; Alwabel.com and GameFuse.com fetched $5,000 apiece and still another duo; Broeken.com and RXDX.com drew $4,260 each in a strong week for four-letter .coms.

Goods things continued to come in twos with MSRT.com and GreenNappies.com notching $4,000 apiece while SmartBalls.com provided a $3,550 bounce. Sedo had 30 more .com sales ranging from $2,000 to $3,500 that are listed in the table below:

Elsewhere the Toby Clements Newsletter sold eCareers.com for $6,000, Morgan Linton's LintonInvestments.com sold BuyLooseDiamonds.com for $5,500 and GoDaddyAuctions moved MM.tv for $4,500. Morgan told me he had picked up BuyLooseDiamonds.com for just $800 in an expired domain auction barely a week before flipping it for 7X what he paid for it. That is a nice ROI by any measure.

Country Codes

The country codes had another outstanding week placing, as I noted earlier, 10 domains on the all extension leader board (eight of which broke the 5-figure barrier). Those 10 names of course fill  the first 10 positions on our new weekly Country Code Top 20 Sales Chart

The highest ccTLD sale you haven't seen yet is #11 TravelAgency.co.uk, sold at Sedo for $7,101. Sedo went on to sweep all 20 positions on the country code leader board, a feat they have accomplished several times over the years in a category they have always dominated.

Their roster included a rare Liechtenstein ccTLD sale, #12 Love.li, at $6,440. As they often do, German .DE domains claimed the most chart positions with seven. The European Union's .EU was next with three and .TV had two. The remaining eight positions were divided among eight different extensions.

Here is how the Country Code Top 20 stacked up for the week ending July 10:

Non .com gTLDs (.biz, .info, .mobi, .net, .org, .asia, .pro & .tel)

While the ccTLDs enjoyed a powerful outing, the opposite was true for the non .com gTLDs. They had no five-figure sales week, leaving the door open for Emerson.mobi to claim #1 on our new Top Top Non .Com gTLD Sales Chart with a $9,500 sale at Sedo. It's the first time we've seen a .mobi in the pole position in a quite awhile.

Another TLD that isn't seen on the leader board often, .asia, gave the longshots another nice payoff this week, taking the #2 slot with POF.asia at $8,000, also through Sedo. Sedo wound up sweeping the top five spots and eight of the top ten. They put three other extensions in the first five; #3 GTG.org ($7,416), #4 Gamebook.net ($6,500) and #5 Werkzeug.info ($5,680)

The AfternicDLS also had a very solid week charting seven domains in this category. Their roster was led by #6 Keer.org at $4,388. Here's how all of the Non .Com gTLD leaders stacked up for the week ending July 10:
