This Week's Chart Leaders Include a Six-Figure Sale at Sedo and One of the Year's 10 Biggest ccTLD Sales

After missing in action for a month, six-figure domain sales are back on the aftermarket scene. For the second week in a row a member of that elite club heads our our all extension Top 20 Sales Chart. Metal.com did the honors this time out, changing hands for $140,000 at Sedo in a deal handled by one of their top brokers, Dave Evanson

Metal.com now has the added distinction of topping the Big Board twice. The domain made its first appearance at #1 on the elite list in February 2010 when it was sold for $165,000. Another example of things domain names have in common with real world real estate - as much as we may wish it wasn't so, prices don't always go up.

Sedo also took the runner-up spot on the new leader board with Chargepoint.com at $80,000 and they went on to pile up nine chart entries overall, including five of the top ten.

By Ron Jackson

Another highlight of the week was one of the year's 10 biggest ccTLD sales. That was #3 CheapCruises.co.uk, a domain that Frank Paul of Fwitter.co.uk sold to Adore Cruises for £50,000 ($77,500). That put the domain at #8 on our Year to Date Country Top 100 Sales Chart (second chart on that page).

That was one of four ccTLDs to earn places on the all extension Top 20 this week. Sedo posted the others including #5 Sugar.co at $30,000 and #11 Message.us at $14,000 - one of the biggest .US (United States country code) sales we have seen in awhile.

The non .com gTLDs were limited to one chart entry - #8 Car-Games.net at $17,000 via Sedo. The buyer of that domain had previously purchased the un-hyphenated version through Sedo for $28,820 in April.

The AfternicDLS and Frank Schilling's DomainNameSales (DNS) both had strong outings to join Sedo in the multiple chart entry club. DomainNamesSales scored four times and placed two names in the top ten with their roster led by #4 Wagr.com at $33,200. The AfternicDLS rang up five charted sales with #9 Shenyun.com leading the charge for them at $16,475. That helped the .coms sweep 15 of the 20 chart entries.

Also earning chart honors this week were DNSR.com with their $20,000 sale of #6 Cashless.com and DropWizard.com, who sold #19 (tie) HoustonCriminalLawyer.com for $7,500

Here is how the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, July 22:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Country Codes

The ccTLDs were led by the four country code sales you saw on the all extension chart at the top of this report including that big $77,500 sale of CheapCruises.co.uk that tops our latest weekly Country Code Top 20 Sales Chart. That is also the biggest .co.uk sale that has been reported thus far in 2012

The biggest sale from this category that you haven't seen yet is #5 Auctionata.de, a domain that went for $6,050 at Sedo, a venue that wound up sweeping 16 of the 20 chart entries. Meanwhile the .de extension (Germany's country code) won the TLD race with six chart entries including #6 (tie) Farben24.de at $4,840

This week's remarkably diverse chart has a dozen different countries represented on it. Only two other extensions had multiple chart entries - Great Britain's .co uk with three and the European Union's .eu with two.

Here is how the ccTLD leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, July 22:
