2014 Domain Sales Season Gets Underway With a Big Canadian ccTLD Sale Leading the Charge

And they are off! The 2014 domain sales season is underway with the first week of reported sales now in the books. With the New Year's Eve/Day holiday cutting into the opening work week one might expect slow going in the aftermarket but quite a few respectable sales were announced.

The first #1 domain of the New Year is a two-letter Canadian ccTLD sold by Ilze Kaulins at ExcellentDomains.ca. She banked $63,000 Canadian dollars ($58,590 U.S.) for IA.ca to take the top spot on our first weekly all extension Top 20 Sales Chart of 2014. Ilze is well-known throughout the industry and has a long track record of successful acquisitions and sales of both .ca and .com domains.

A pair of .coms filled the next two slots on the Big Board. NameJet sold #2 XiaoXiao.com for $51,688 and Scott Neuman's DomainPortfolioServices.com collected $50,000 for #3 OnBroadway.com.

By Ron Jackson

Go Daddy/Afternic rang up the week's biggest non .com gTLD sale, claiming the #4 slot with a very nice $36,000 sale of Uber.org

NameJet rounded out the first five with GetCash.com at $33,901. They went on to pile up 11 of the 20 chart entries. There are two primary reasons for that - one, because they report their sales once a month rather than weekly as some other major venues do and two, because they are a long established sales platform that consistently rings up sales in this price range.

Also bagging multiple chart entries were Go Daddy/Afternic with four and Sedo with two. NoktaDomains earned chart honors as well with #12 Tesettur.com going for $18,025

While a ccTLD took the top spot and a non .com gTLD reached the top five, the .coms swept every other position on the elite list, 18 of 20 entries overall. Thus far, the impending arrival of hundreds of new gTLDs doesn't appear to have slaked any of the thirst for quality .coms.

Here is how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 5:

Country Codes

The ccTLDs got 2014 off on the right foot with that blockbuster $58,590 sale of IA.ca we told you about at the top of this report. As it turns out 2-letter domains like that were the story of the week for the country codes with NameJet charting a dozen sales from their recent auction of two-letter .co.uk domains

FO.co.uk took the #2 spot on our first Country Code Top 20 Sales Chart of the New Year after changing hands in the NameJet sale for $9,701. #3 XC.co.uk contributed $8,001 and #4 SE.co.uk added $7,500. Sedo rounded out the first five with Unitel.st at $6,800.

Thanks to all of those two-letter sales, Great Britain's .co.uk easily won the extension race with 14 chart entries. Germany's .de was the only other TLD with more than one chart entry. They scored twice with a pair that included an IDN, #19 Terrassenschiebetüren.de at $2,584.

Non .com gTLDs (.biz, .info, .mobi, .net, .org, .asia, .pro & .tel)

Like the ccTLDs, the non .com gTLDs had only one five-figure sale, but - again like the ccTLDs, they made it count, getting a $36,000 boost from Go Daddy/Afternic's sale of Uber.org. The #2 spot on the year's first weekly Non .com gTLD Top 20 Sales Chart went to Sedo for their $9,999 sale of Zoho.net.

Two more .nets followed - #3 Skyland.net at $7,999 via Go Daddy/Afternic and #4 (tie) Children.net at $7,500 through NameJet. Go Daddy/Afternic also claimed a share of that #4 slot with GoldStandard.org at $7,500

.Net narrowly won the extension race with 10 chart entries, nipping the 9 claimed by .Org. .Infos took the other two slots (the extra chart entry resulted from a tie for the final opening). Here's how all of the Non .Com gTLD leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, Jan. 5:
