AfternicDLS Solves Aftermarket Puzzle to Claim Top Two Spots on This Week's Domain Sales Chart

The Afternic DLS has always had a laser like focus on the small to medium sized business market where the sweet spot for domain sales is in the four figure range. They ring up hundreds of those weekly but this week they also took a side trip to the ultra high end of the market by selling Puzzle.com for $500,000. That ties for the second biggest sale reported so far this year, a position shared with GamesForGirls.com and trailing only Running Shoes.com at $700,000. The AfternicDLS also took the #2 spot on our latest weekly Top 20 Domain Sales Chart, just missing a second six-figure sale with EJU.com coming in at $96,000

Sedo.com included Gambling.com at $2.5 million on their sales list this week, however according to the public WhoIs record at press time, that domain still has not been transferred to the new owner (a requirement before we can consider a sale to be completed and eligible for chart consideraton). Gambling.com also continues to point to the well developed business website operated by the seller (Media Corp.). As I wrote last week, that raises a question as to whether this can be considered a domain only sale (also a requirement for our chart). If the buyer is going to keep and utilize the existing website as is, that obviously would be something else of substantial value (beyond the name itself) that the $2.5 million was used to acquire.

By Ron Jackson

Even with that sale at least temporarily out of our chart mix, Sedo had another very strong week, piling up 12 of the 20 chart entries including five of the top ten. Their first big run started with #3 POW.com ($75,000), #4 T.ag ($60,000) and #5 Tiempo.com ($41,900). That T.ag sale (a ccTLD representing Antigua and Barbuda) is the year's second biggest country code sale, behind only Deals.com.au that was sold for $100,000 in April.

That wasn't the only big country code sale this week either. After charting just one domain on the all extension leader board last week, the ccTLDs returned to their usual solid form this week by claming six places on the Big Board, including four that hit the top half of the elite list. Poker.org.uk gave Sedo a 6th place tie at $41,000 and they also scored with #10 Want.it at $26,500. Sandwiched in between at #8 was Lista.pl ("list" in Polish), a domain that sold for $33,733 at Aftermarket.pl. The country codes got a further boost from a South African ccTLD, #14 BusinessInsurance.co.za, that was sold by Durni Companies LLC for $18,975 in a private transaction,.

With .coms corralling a dozen chart entries, that left just two spots for the non .com gTLDs. Those went to #12 (tie) SanFrancisco.net, sold at Sedo for $20,000, and #15 Photo.pro, a name that changed hands through the AfternicDLS for $18,000

Sedo and the AfternicDLS were the only venues with multiple chart entries this week but MediaOptions was able to take a bow with #9 AdvertisingAgency.com at $33,000. Congratulations are also in order for long time domainer/developer Sol Orwell (previously known as Ahmed Farooq) who acquired #6 (tie) Examine.com for $41,000 for his new website devoted to examining claims made about various popular dietary supplements.

Here's how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, May 8:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Country Codes

As I mentioned above, the country codes were clicking on all cylinders again this week with a half dozen solid five-figure sales. Those all made the all extension Top 20 Chart and of course they fill the first six positions on our new Country Code Top Chart as well. The highest ccTLD sale you haven't seen yet is #7 Gowrings.co.uk, sold at Sedo for $9,840

This is the second time that Gowrings.co.uk has been sold at Sedo this year. Back in March in changed hands for just £1,000 ($1,640), so that buyer obviously made a very handsome return on their investment with this new flip.

Domains representing three different counties fill out the top ten. #8 FindEmployment.ca (Canadian ccTLD) changed hands for $9,250 through OK.ca, Apostas.pt (Portuguese ccTLD) drew $8,580 at Sedo and Properties.co.nz (New Zealand ccTLD) attracted $8,000, also at Sedo.

Here is how the Country Code Top 20 stacked up for the week ending May 8:
