Latest news of the domain name industry

Two of the Year's 10 Biggest Domain Sales Were Completed This Week Along With the Year's 2nd Biggest ccTLD Sale

The domain aftermarket enjoyed a very solid outing this week, generating two of the year's ten biggest sales, plus 2011's 2nd biggest country code sale and its 4th largest non .com gTLD sale.

In a deal brokered by DomainAdvisors.com, 33.com led the charge with a $358,000 sale to a buyer in China. That is the highest numeric domain sale reported since we started tracking the aftermarket in the fall of 2003. The runner-up spot when to Cupidon.com ("cupid" in French), a domain acquired by the operators of Cupid.com for $285,250 in a private transaction (thanks to Michael Berkens for the tip on  this transaction). 33.com and Cupidon.com now rank as the 6th and 7th largest sales reported so far this year.

In other market highlights this week Michael Mann's DomainMarket.com closed an $80,000 sale of Business.co by completing transfer of the domain to the new owner who is based in the Czech Republic. That is the year's 2nd biggest ccTLD sale, trailing only Deals.com.au which sold for $100,000 last month. The non. com gTLDs got into the act too with that category logging its 4th largest sale of 2011 - Bills.org at $70,000 in a deal handled by Sedo.com

Sandwiched in between the two six-figure sales and the two biggest non .com sales (which rank 4th and 5th on our new weekly Top 20 Sale Chart) is a nice two-letter .com sale at #3. That is XQ.com, a domain that changed hands for $85,000 in a deal jointly brokered by the Toby Clements Newsletter and PremierPortfolio.com

Sedo accounted for three of the five remaining top ten sales with a group led by #6 Humidifiers.com at $50,000. They went on to pile up 11 of 20 chart entries overall including three ccTLD sales, giving that category four places on the all extension leader board. One of those was an IDN - #15  (tie) Gärtnerei.de ("greenhouse" in German) at $16,493 (the non IDN version sold for the same price).

The non .com gTLDs also wound up with four spots on the elite list. Three of those were .orgs, including DNStore.com's sale #10 01.org to the Intel Corporation for $25,000 and MediaOptions.com's sale of #17 (tie) Cacao.org for $15,000.

The AfternicDLS joined Sedo as the only venues with multiple chart entries. They hit the trifecta with a trio of names led by #8 FunChat.com at $40,000.

Here's how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, May 22:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Country Codes

The country codes continued to rock with eight five-figure sales this week including the year's 2nd highest ccTLD sale - Business.co at $80,000 - the leader on our new Country Code Top 20 Sales Chart. We showed you all of the five figure sales in the all extension section above so the highest ccTLD sale you haven't seen yet is #9 SMO.co.uk, sold at Sedo for $9,780. BliXemInternet rounded out the top ten with their $9,590 sale of a Dutch ccTLD, Artikel.nl.

BliXemInternet (with three charted domains) was the only venue other than Sedo to claim multiple chart entries. Sedo, the traditional powerhouse in this category, swept 15 of the 20 chart entries. DomainLore.co.uk was one of the three venues other than Sedo to earn a place on the elite list. They did it with #19 Adopt.co.uk at $5,868

As is often the case, Germany's .de had the most chart entries with six, followed by Great Britain's .co.uk with four. The Netherlands' .nl also did well, claiming three spots on the leader board.

Here is how the Country Code Top 20 stacked up for the week ending May 22:
