How much traffic does a particular website get? Alexa will give you a good idea. You download a free toolbar (which millions of others have already downloaded). Alexa tracks where the toolbar users visit and uses the data to assign a ranking number to every website. The number (which appears on the toolbar) shows where the site you are visiting ranks among all sites on the web. More detailed traffic information is available by clicking on the ranking number. It is similar to how Nielsen uses an audience sample to determine TV ratings. Alexa is now owned by Amazon.

Domain history is revealed by the Archive Wayback Machine. Type in a domain address and if it previously had an active web site on it, the Wayback machine will let you see those old web pages! Data comes from Alexa who has archived billions of web pages dating back many years.

Public Interest Registry

PIR is the registry for .ORG domain names. Use their WhoIs function to check on the status of .ORG domains you are interested in. To see who owns the domain and their contact info, you will need to click on the direct link PIR gives to the registrar for each domain, then use the registrar's WhoIs for the lookup.
TESS Trademark Search
TESS is the U.S. Patent Office's official search engine. Invaluable in checking if a name you are interested in has been trademarked (and if so, for what purpose. You still may be able to use the name for an alterate purpose).
