Software Company's $375,000 Domain Purchase Tops This Week's Sales Chart

Week 2 of the 2013 domain sales season produced a very substantial six-figure sale. We learned that Booker Software Inc. paid $375,000 to acquire Booker.com in a private transaction, giving the new year its first six-figure sale.

For a brief time late last week it looked like we would be reporting the year's first seven-figure sale but initial reports that Rockies.com had been sold for $1.2 million to Major League Baseball were refuted by MLB who said those reports were false. MLB said they bought the name under a non-disclosure agreement and the league declined to reveal how much they did pay.

The runner-up spot on this week's all-extension Top 20 Sales Chart went to Sedo for their $50,000 sale of Wolfgangs.com. Sedo went on to pile up 18 of the 26 chart entries (the extra positions were the result of a seven-way tie for the last place on the elite list). Sedo's haul included seven of the top ten sales including #4 DreamCruises.com at $28,000 and two names that tied for #5 at $25,000 apiece - Pigster.com and TopApps.com.

By Ron Jackson

Michael Mann's DomainMarket.com also landed a spot in the first five after selling #3 ACAM.com for $40,000 in a deal brokered by DomainHoldings.com. Mann said he had acquired the domain in 2005 for just $350! That's what you call a nice return on investment.

Afternic.com had their usual solid week with a hand in five charted sales. Their roster was led by #10 Yum.in (Indian ccTLD) at $16,000. That was one of two country code domains that earned places on the Big Board. The other was #9 Choinki.pl (Polish ccTLD), sold for $17,290 at Sedo.

Sedo also had the week's biggest non .com gTLD sale - #8 RTB.net at $18,000. That is one of four non .com gTLDS on the leader board, joining Afternic's joint sale with YummyNames of #15 TPO.org at $12,077, Afternic's $10,595 sale of #19 GWK.net and Sedo's $10,000 sale of #20 (tie) Insured.org

That was all the ground the .coms gave up as they swept 20 of the 26 chart entries including a NoktaDomains.com sale of #20 (tie) Konteyner.com at $10,000. Here is how the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, January 13:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value cash only sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.
