Blockbusters Take a Breather But Three Dozen Five-Figure Deals Dot This Week's Domain Sales Report

No completed six-figure or higher sales were reported this week but there were three dozen solid five-figure sales. While we wait to see if the recent auction for Pizza.com (ending at $2.6 million) successfully closes, the door was left open for a lot of mid-range domains to take the spotlight.

The AfternicDLS had the best of those and gave .net a rare turn in the top position after selling FilmSchool.net for $49,501. That was one of five chart entries for Afternic and they put another .net in the first five with #5 Trabajo.net ("work" or "job" in Spanish) at $34,000.

We again expanded the usual Top 20 by ten positions this week to make room for another round of completed auctions from the Moniker/T.R.A.F.F.I.C. West sale in February (plus one from the iDate conference live auction). Six of the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. auction sales landed on the leader board, led by GoldDigger.com and GoldDiggers.com at $40,000 each.

By Ron Jackson

Sedo.com had another big week claiming 14 of the 30 chart positions. Their roster was led by #4 Bobblehead.com at $36,000. Sedo had sold the plural version of that domain last month for $29,112. Sedo put three more names in the top ten; N5.com ($25,500), SGN.com ($25,001) and NeoNet.com ($21,500) and also had the highest country code sale with #18 Voeding.nl (Netherlands ccTLD with a keyword that means "food" in Dutch) at €10,000 ($15,878).

The Castello Brothers, who seldom sell domains, made their first chart appearance after deciding to let #17 JupiterIslandRealEstate.com go for $17,500. Jupiter Island is a wealthy enclave off Florida's Atlantic Coast, close to where Michael and David Castello of the Castello Cities Internet Network grew up in Boynton Beach.

There is a fair amount of variety on this week's chart. In addition to 20 .com domains, there are five .nets, a .org and four country codes (.nl, .tv, .lu and .de, with the latter three representing Tuvalu, Luxembourg and Germany respectively). Here is how all of the top sellers stacked up for the week ending Sunday, April 20:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.
