Invest.com Rings Up Over $1 Million to Top All Sales Reported Over the Past Two Weeks

We were away covering the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. New York conference so there was no domain sales report last week. This week we will bring you completely back up to speed by covering all of the notable sales reported since our last column Sept. 16. We have also doubled the length of all three charts, from 20 to 40 positions, to accommodate the top sales from the expanded data pool that we will be wading through this time out.

There is no doubt about  the premier domain - that's Invest.com - a name that rang up a hefty $1,015,000 through Sedo's GreatDomains. That was the first seven-figure sale reported since the first quarter of this year. The completion of this transaction and the $4 million in live auction sales at T.R.A.F.F.I.C. last week helped to close out the third quarter of 2008 on a positive note (we will have more details on the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. auctions and all show events in our comprehensive conference review article that is scheduled for publication this coming weekend).

By Ron Jackson

After that million dollar sale at the top of the chart, the rest of the headliners dropped back into the five figure range, but there were 37 of those to report, led by a very strong .net sale, #2 CoiffureFemme.net ("women's hairstyle" in French) at €55,000 ($77,550). Sedo sold that domain and went on to claim 15 of the 42 chart entries, more than any other venue (the extra two positions resulted from a three-way tie for the final spot on the Big Board).

Moniker had a hand in eight sales, with #3 EstrellaDigital.com ("star digital" in Spanish) heading their roster at $70,326. The AfternicDLS also piled up eight chart entries en route to another solid week. While .com enjoyed its usual chart dominance, five non .com Global Contenders and five ccTLDs also managed to crash the all extension leader board. The Global Contenders were represented by a pair of .nets, a .org, a .mobi and a .info. The country codes included a pair of German domains (.de) and one each from France (.fr), Switzerland (.ch) and the European Union (.eu)

Two of those ccTLDs soared all the way into to top ten with #8 (tie) Allgemeine.de
("general" in German) commanding €14,000 ($19,740) and #10 Rachat-de-Credit.fr
("repurchase of credit" in French) banking €13,500 ($19,035) - quite a nice sum for a double hyphenated country code domain. Europeans tend to be less averse to hyphens than domain buyers in the U.S. are.

Here is how all of the top sellers stacked up for the two week period ending Sunday, September 28:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.
