Just
What the Doctor Ordered - Physicians.com Changes Hands for $250,000
in One of the Year's Top Ten Sales
Last month Richard Gabriel sold Auction.com
for $1.7 million in the year's third biggest domain sale to
date. Gabriel is back on our weekly Top 20 chart this week,
but this time as the buyer of Physicians.com, a name he
acquired in a private transaction for $250,000. That sale
also ranks among the ten biggest deals reported so
far in 2009.
NameJet.com
nabbed the #2 slot with a nifty numerical name, 401.com, at a
cool $65,100. That was one of three domains they placed on the
elite list, including another another top ten entry, #10 Yiyi.com
at $12,445.
Sedo
has more chart entries than any other venue with seven and five of
those landed on the top half of the chart, led by #3 Vodkas.com
at $28,595.
By
Ron Jackson
Sedo also accounted for all three of the country
code domains that crashed the all extension leader board and all
of those ranked among the top ten. Bob.de led the ccTLD
charge after changing hands for €12,500 ( $16,625). Our
records show that same domain sold back in June of 2004 (also at
Sedo) for just $3,399, so it quintupled in value over the
intervening five years.
The U.S. government moved to ease
some of its restrictions on relations with Cuba this week,
leading to a lot of excitement among owners of Cuba related domain
names. Rob Sequin has always been one of the active players
in that sector and he sold #4 CafeHabana.com for $18,000
this week. However, the slight thaw in Cuban-American relations had
nothing to do with that transaction. The name was purchased by a New
York restaurateur to promote his business there.
Aside from the three ccTLDs, the only other
non .com domain on the Big Board was #19 Pizzeria.org, sold
at Sedo for $7,980. .Com swept the remaining 16
positions. The AfternicDLS
and SnapNames.com
each placed three .coms on the Top 20 to join Sedo and NameJet among
the venues that claimed multiple chart entries.
Here is how all of the
leaders stack up for the week ending Sunday, April 12:

Keep in mind that these are the highest
value sales that have been reported to us in the
past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool,
not a complete list documenting ALL high
value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce
because many sales are kept private at the insistence of
buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the
accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.
Forthe many newcomers entering the domain
industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market.
If you do not understand why specific domain names command the
prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases.
We highly recommend that you do some basic research beforeyou buyanything! As a starting point we have
built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Country Codes
The country codes have surged so much over
the past year that they are consistently turning in better results
than the non .com global TLDs. As a result, we are moving the ccTLD
section up to the #2 position in our weekly report, changing places
with the Global Contenders who will now be in the closing
section.
The top three country code sales all cracked the
five-figure mark and made the all extension leader board you saw at
the top of this report. The top ccTLD sales you haven't seen yet are
a pair of British .co.uk domains that tied for #4 at $7,500
each. Those were E-14.co.uk and Element14.co.uk. Both
names were sold at Sedo, a venue that swept all 20 positions
on our new Country Code Top 20 Chart.
Germany's .de had the most chart entries with
six, including #6 Diablo2.de at $5,985. One of those
.de's was an IDN, #18 Parfümhaus.de at $3,165.
Here is how all of the

Global Contenders
(.biz, .info, .mobi, .name, .net & .org)
Pizzeria.org served up the week's top Global

took the #2 slot as well, with InternetPoker.org raking in a $6,000
pot, also at Sedo. .Net wound up taking the most chart entries
overall with 11, including #3 Gaucho.net, sold for $5,400
at the AfternicDLS.
.Info got into the act with #4 Megapixel.info
at $5,254. We also saw charted sales in .travel, .mobi

Brisbane.tel dialed up 2,500 Australian dollars (US$1,692)
in a private transaction. The same seller also moved Adelaide.tel
