Gamez.com Takes Top Spot on This Week's Sales Chart With $77,000 Sale at Sedo

It is probably just the journalist in me, but I must say I've never been a fan of domain names that are misspelled on purpose, including those that have a "Z" at the end where an "S" belongs. I know there are those who believe this kind of typo (utilizing similar sounding letters) makes a good brandable domain name or will produce a lot of typo traffic (and both points may be true) but I tend to just think "If these folks can't spell, what else are they going to mess up!" and move on to another site. :-)

Having said that, I am obviously in the minority as there is clearly demand for such domains in the .com extension as witnessed by this week's #1 reported sale - Gamez.com at $77,100 via Sedo.com. Sedo also took the runner-up spot with BestOnlineColleges.com at $56,000 and they went on to sweep 11 of the 20 entries on our latest weekly all extension leader board.

By Ron Jackson

Moniker.com and SnapNames.com hit trifectas as each placed a trio of names on the Top 20 Chart. Two of Moniker's high end sales came from their live auction at this month's DOMAINfest Ft. Lauderdale conference where they sold #3 Therapists.com for $50,000 and #11 GolfResorts.com for $22,500. SnapNames benefited from some solid sales made in  their recent .me premium domain auction, including #13 Trade.me at $18,501 and #16 Map.me at $14,500.

Sedo had an even bigger .me sale with #5 (tie) Join.me at $45,000 and as strong as that sale was, there was an even bigger ccTLD on the elite list - #4 Laarzen.nl ("boots" in Dutch) at $46,125 made by BliXem Internet Services. The ccTLDs wound up taking six places on the Big Board including two occupied by .co.uk domains; #15 Content.co.uk at $14,544 and #17 DiamondEngagementRings.co.uk at $14,364. Sedo handled both of those sales.

The non .com gTLDs had two representatives on the chart - #10 CarLoans.net ($24,000 at Sedo) and #19 Relationship.net ($12,950 at SnapNames). .Coms gobbled up the other 12 openings with the AfternicDLS accounting for two of those sales; #5 (tie) VBB.com at $45,000 and #20 ChangeCourse.com at $12,500

Here is how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, May 23:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Country Codes

After simmering a bit last week, the country codes returned to a full boil this week with nine five-figure sales - two of those cracking the $45,000 mark. It was also a good sign that many countries shared in the bounty. It used to be that Germany's .de and Great Britain's .co.uk accounted for virtually all of the high dollar country code sales, but six different countries were represented in the five-figure club this week; The Netherlands (.nl), Montenegro (.me), the European Union (.eu) and Spain (.es), along with .de and .co.uk.

We listed all of those five-figure ccTLD sales in the all extension section at the top of this report. The highest country code sale you haven't seen yet is #10 Design.me, sold for $9,250 at SnapNames. Thanks to that venue's recent premium .me auction, the extension piled up seven chart entries - more than any other ccTLD. .co,uk was next with four and .de had three.

SnapNames's success with .me also helped them break up Sedo's near monopoly in ccTLD sales, at least for one week. While Sedo still easily took the most chart entries with 12, SnapNames made a strong showing by claiming six places on the elite list (all .me domains).

Here is how all of the country code leaders stacked up for the week ending May 23:
