Year's 6th Seven-Figure Sale Takes Top Spot on This Week's Domain Sales Chart

The domain aftermarket rang up another seven-figure sale this week as Moniker/SnapNames closed a $1,058,830 transaction for Zip.com after auctioning the name off at the DOMAINfest Europe conference earlier this month in Prague. That ranks as the 5th highest sale reported so far in 2010 and is the year's 6th sale to crack the million dollar mark.

It is likely we will be charting another blockbuster, a half-million dollar sale, soon. Sedo broker Ryan Colby just handled a $500,000 sale of Logo.com. The transfer had not yet been completed at press time, but once that is done this sale will be official and added to our charts.

This week's seven-figure headliner was accompanied by a pair of six-figure sales. #2 Schoenen.nl ("shoes" in Dutch) went for $165,600 in a private transaction and an IDN, #3 日本.com (IDN)
("Japan" in Japanese) changed hands for $100,000 in another private deal (that domain was sold by Moshe Schneider).

By Ron Jackson

The buyer of Schoenen.nl, Four People B.V., also bought #8 Spijkerbroeken .nl ("jeans" in Dutch) for $27,600. Looks like they are out to corner apparel terms in the Netherlands' .nl ccTLD. Last spring they bought Laarzen.nl ("boots" in Dutch) for $46,125

Those .nl sales helped the country codes post another outstanding week, piling up 7 of the 20 entries on our new weekly all extension leader board. Three of the five biggest sales were ccTLDs including #4 Rugs.co.uk at $94,800 and #5 Mozy.de at $69,000. Sedo rang up both of those sales.

The non .com gTLDs had just one representative on the Big Board - #15 JobHunt.org, sold at NameJet for $18,800. That was one of four NameJet sales on the elite list, but Sedo was the venue that dominated the Top 20, claiming 11 places on the chart.

Here is how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, Oct. 24:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

Those nine high end sales were all listed on the all extension leader board you saw above. The highest ccTLD sale you haven't seen yet ranks #10 on our Country Code Top 20 Chart. That is GreatContent.co.uk, a domain that generated $9,283 at Sedo.

Sedo piled up 19 of the 22 entries overall (the two extra positions resulted from a three-way tie for the final opening). Two Sedo chart entries that tied for #17 gave America's .US extension a pair of $5,000 sales; Ditto.us and SolarPanels.us.

As always, we welcome all verifiable sales reports from companies, private sellers or individuals with knowledge of an important sale made through any channel. To contribute information and help make this column better,  just drop a note to [email protected].

We truly appreciate the industry leading companies who share their sales information with us to help everyone in the business get a handle on current domain values. Richard Meyer of Domain Sales Center also provides invaluable help in collecting data for these sales reports each week.

Every Wednesday we publish the highest reported domain name sales for the previous week. On Mondays and Tuesdays our contributors send us their sales data for the previous 7 days. We then compile that information and write this article to give you the most comprehensive sales report in the industry.

Editor's Note: If you wish to review previous Domain Sales columns, they are available in our Archive.
