Has Hades Frozen Over? .BIZ Tops All Extensions on This Week's Domain Sales Chart - Five of Top Six Sales Are Non .Coms

This has to be one of the most unusual weeks we've ever seen in the domain aftermarket. The often-maligned .BIZ TLD topped all comers to lead our new all extension Top 20 Sales Chart and five of the first six places were swept by non .com TLDs. Appropriately enough, the unlikely leader on the all extension list is All.biz, sold at Sedo for a phenomenal $61,750 making it the largest non .com gTLD sale so far this year.

Two other non .com gTLDs (both .orgs) and a pair of ccTLDs also took places among the top six, leaving only one spot on  the upper reaches of the chart for the usually dominant .coms - that was #3 SmartGrid.com, sold at Sedo for $33,500."

2.de led the country codes - at #2 of course - with a $40,310 sale at Sedo, a venue that piled up 15 of the 20 chart entries and 7 of the top 10. #4 Music.co gave the ccTLDS another big sale at $30,000, also through Sedo.  All told. five country codes made the elite list, including the year's biggest .US sale - #18 (tie) Very.us - at $13,000.

By Ron Jackson

The non .com gTLDs have three representatives on the Big Board with #4 (tie) SCH.org ($25,000) and #6 Telomere.org ($24,900) joining All.biz. The AfternicDLS sold both of those high profile .orgs and took four places on the leader board, including another top ten entry with #7 (tie) Mech.com at $22,000

The .coms still took the majority of chart entries, 12 overall, with a roster that included #7 (tie) Growers.com, sold through Michael Mann's DomainMarket.com for $22,000

Here's how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, March 13:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.
