Sales That Rank Among the Year's Best in Three Different Categories Headline This Week's Action in the Domain Aftermarket

This was quite a week for the domain aftermarket as we saw not only the biggest sale of the year to date in RunningShoes.com at $700,000, but also the biggest country code sale of the year - Deals.com.au at $100,000 - and the second biggest non .com gTLD sale of the year - Outreach.org at $90,400. Those domains fill the first three slots on our new weekly all extension Top 20 Sales Chart

The company that bought RunningShoes.com, Cat5 Commerce, contacted me with the news just a few hours after last week's column was posted. Jamie Zoch of DotWeekly.com (who was also given  the news) helped me verify the sale by obtaining the documentation we require.

Cat5 already has a new ecommerce site up and running on the domain. RunningShoes.com has been used to sell running shoes in the past, but Cat5 said they bought the domain only and started their own site from scratch. Andrew Alleman posted an illuminating back story on why Cat5 went after this domain in a post at Domain Name Wire today that I recommend for more details on the biggest transaction we've seen thus far in 2011.

By Ron Jackson

A corporate buyer was also behind the purchase of #2 Deals.com.au (Australian ccTLD). The owners of a group buying website called Zoupon decided they needed a name that better described their business so they broke open their wallets to get Deals.com.au. Sydney's Daily Telegraph posted the full story here.

NameJet gets credit for the non .com gTLD sale that also earned a place among the first three. At $90,400 Outreach.org trails only AutoInsurance.org (sold for $440,000 earlier this month) in this category's 2011 rankings.

The diversity at the top of the Big Board continued throughout the elite list with five non .com gTLDs and four ccTLDs joining 11 .coms on the leader board. The .com contingent included #4 CEN.com, sold for $90,000 at Moniker/SnapNames and a pair of Sedo sales that followed; #5 Instyler.com ($73,500) and #6 Fiver.com ($70,000)

The non .com gTLD group had a second representative in the top ten, #7 Guitars.net, sold at MediaOptions.com for $26,000. A pair of .infos also joined the chart party, finishing back to back at #15 (Makemetaller.info at $12,500) and #16 (Carpet.info at $12,495).

Sedo led the race among venues by piling up 11 of the 20 chart entries, including three ccTLDs that landed on the second half of the ladder (led by #14 CarInsurance.tv at $13,200). Also taking multiple positions were NameJet with three and MediaOptions with two.

Here's how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, April 24:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.
