The Continuing Adventures of the Domain Aftermarket: Return of the 6-Figure Sale

After two weeks without a publicly reported 6-figure sale, MediaOptions.com broke the brief blockbuster drought by wrapping up a $200,000 sale of Adventure.com that they brokered. The domain was purchased by Eric Borgos of Impulse Communications, Inc. -  the latest addition to a very nice portfolio of generic gems that he owns.

The runner-up spot on this week's all extension Top 20 Sales Chart goes to Phrases.com, a domain that brokerage house  UpMarketDNS.com (formerly known as UpMarketURLs) sold for $80,000 after DNForum.com owner Adam Dicker enlisted them to market the domain for him. UpMarketDNS also had a hand in a second top ten sale, teaming up with Bido.com to move #6 SocialLife.com for $42,500

By Ron Jackson

The .coms had a big week, sweeping the first eight places on the leader board and 16 of 23 positions overall (the extra spots resulted from a four-way tie for the final opening). Legendary domain investor Garry Chernoff helped the .com cause by selling #3 (tie) AdNet.com for $60,000. The AfternicDLS and their domain listing service partner Moniker/SnapNames also rang up a $60,000 sale with Chop.com

Iolite.com rounded out the first five in a $48,458 private transaction. Iolite is a purple gemstone and Iolite.com was one the many gem and jewelry domains held by seller DomainGems.com.

Sedo.com took more places on the elite list than any other venue, piling up 12 chart entries with a roster led by #7  ElectrictyRates.com at $20,000. In addition, Sedo accounted for all five of the ccTLDs on the Big Board. Their country code group included three .co domains that Sedo sold for DomainMarket.com owner Michael Mann; Cigar.co and Ski.co at $15,000 each and Automotive.co at $10,000. Sedo also had a hand in the two non .com gTLD sales that made the Top 20 - #16 Immobilienmakler.net ("real estate broker" in German) at $11,520 and #17 Antonio.net at $11,000 (they sold the latter domain on behalf of the AfternicDLS as one of their listing service partners).

The four charted sales made between private parties (rather than through one of the major sale venues) included #14 iSuggest.com at $13,000 and a $12,000 sale of #15 SmartLoans.com made by Justin Godfrey of DIS Inc.

Here's how all of the sales leaders stacked up for the week ending Sunday, June 12:

Keep in mind that these are the highest value sales that have been reported to us in the past week. This column is meant to be an educational tool, not a complete list documenting ALL high value domain sales. Such a list is impossible to produce because many sales are kept private at the insistence of buyers, sellers or both. Our procedure for verifying the accuracy of domain sales reports is available here.

For the many newcomers entering the domain industry we also want to point out that the reasons why a domain name sells for a certain price can be varied and are not always clear to those who are unfamiliar with the domain market. If you do not understand why specific domain names command the prices they do, you are likely to make unwise domain registrations or purchases. We highly recommend that you do some basic research before you buy anything! As a starting point we have built a sister site specifically for you at NameNewbie.com.

The highest country code sale you haven't seen yet is a Dutch domain, #6 Wijnproeverij.nl ("wine tasting" in Dutch) at $7,920, also through Sedo who swept 19 of the 20 chart entries. A one-letter .cm domain (Cameroon country code), A.cm, was next at $7,300 (one of three one-letter .cm domains on the elite list).
